A Little Randomness (House and ‘Mech assignment)

These tables are written up so as to allow a random roll or two ten-sided dice to determine  affiliation (House, bandits, Barony, etc) and then determine a ‘Mech.

How to use;

Go to a random number generating page such as Random.org or grab a couple of ten-sided dice (if you have those then you already know how to use them).

Using the first result find your affiliation and with your second roll the ‘Mech the fates have given you (a very rare third roll may be needed as well).

Random ‘Mech Assignment Table: 3025

If all players agree they may simply choose a faction if they do not want to randomly generate one and then move to the corresponding ‘Mech assignment table.

It’s Not going to be the Tabletop game (or even MechWarror 5).

What is going to be different from current or previous games?

Mike McCain; “We’re trying to move past just ‘Mechs. ‘Mechs are awesome, we love ‘Mechs but we want to make sure we’re showing all aspects of this world,… That sense of grit and age, that sense of flying by the seat of your pants.”

Jordan Weisman; “… this is really a universe in technological retrograde and so that means that salvage is important and means ‘Mechs look like they’ve been put together out of salvage. especially when you’re a low end merc company and you’re scratching for a living. Things aren’t all shiny and new. We want to take that to a level we haven’t seen before so that we can really feel like the patchwork quilts that they are after having been handed down generation to generation, modified on the battlefield as necessary for survival, <audio skip>. I think that’s really important.

Setting them in the larger world of vehicles. If you’re going to be the king of the battlefield there needs to be queens and bishops and pawns on the battlefield as well…”

Mitch Getilman: “…Combined arms.”

Take-away;

  • ‘Mechs owned by your MercCorp are not the shiny, spotless, fresh-off-the-assembly-line toys of the rich and famous. They are pillars of salvage, held together with bailing wire and bubblegum.
  • Your MercCorp is going to start at the bottom of the ladder and have to work it’s way up.
  • Vehicles will play a significant part on the battlefield.

Why turned based?

  • They want to offer a much deeper level of tactical control.
  • Mech Commander, an RTS, had to have abstractions to prevent information overload.
  • Turn-based games allow more information to be used by the player at their own pace.
  • Allows both melee and Death-From-Above (DFA) physical attacks.

Are the Tabletop (TT) rules being followed to the letter?

  • HBS’ goal is to reproduce the spirit of the game, not going to use dice mechanics.
  • Make a game appropriate for a computer.
  • Use their 30 years of game design to make a better play experience.
  • Your expectations of what a particular weapon does and feels like is accurate but the game code won’t consist of rolling two six-sided dice.

We can look forward to a game that doesn’t rely on fast-twitch skills but solely on the player’s ability to plan, coordinate, and lead your rag-tag band of mercenaries up from the mass of the unwashed all the way to the top of the heap.

A true “thinking man’s” BattleTech game.

Hey Harebrained Schemes; Give Me Options!

Customization in Single Player versus PvP modes.

Game Balance

No PvP – No Big Deal. After all, the only person the player has to justify their actions to are the player themselves.

PvP mode – Now a Big, Big Deal. Other players are directly impacted by each others choices.

The bane of many a multiplayer game that has gone down in flames was finding the proper balance in multiplayer mode. When a few players discover how to “meta game” the rules and construct the “meta” build which is nearly unbeatable this upsets game balance. And woe to the new player that doesn’t read all the websites and forums but instead just hops into a quick match only to walk away frustrated and likely never to play that mode or worse the game again.

Blizzard has tried many routes over the years to balance the PvP side of World of Warcraft. Some say it was fine “when X, Y and Z” were implemented while others would tell you that’s when it was at its worse. If a big game company can keep the PvP side alive only by fiddling around every so often a much smaller studio is going to have its hands full. This will lead to higher maintenance cost thru coding, database and player analysis, as well as meetings and management attention.

How to keep it simple and as low a cost to HBS as possible?

Options. Lots and lots of options in the single player campaigns while fewer in the PvP mode. Let’s take a look at drag racing and a very few of the classes the cars are built/assigned to;

  • Stock – Few modifications
  • Super Stock – Engine modifications are permitted must retain the correct engine block, cylinder heads, and carburetor. Otherwise highly modified.
  • Super Street – Engine and chassis modifications are virtually unlimited

How do we apply this to BattleTech?

In the single player campaign a scoring system can be used to show how difficult a campaign was and how well the player did. The stricter the rule set the player chooses the higher the potential score. The more wide open the rule set the lower the final score. This score could also translate into reputation for the MercCorp (mercenary corporation) and in turn lead to better or “not quite so good” contracts. Examples might be;

  • Stock – No modifications. Higher risk, higher rewards.
  • Super Stock – Limited weapon and armor changes. No engine changes.
  • Pro Mod – Limited engine, weapon, and armor changes. Medium risk, medium rewards.
  • Top Sportsman – Limited engine changes. Unlimited Weapon and armor changes.
  • Unlimited – As the label says; no limits. If you have the weight or space then bring it. Low Risk, low rewards.

Should HBS also implement gyro and actuator modifications then they would need to decide in which class(es) modifications to those items would be allowed and disallowed.

All five of these options could be in a single player game while only two or three might see their way into a multiplayer arena mode. Thus cost to the studio is lowered while the players can play the game their way and those that choose to participate in the  multiplayer game can enjoy that mode as well.

In a PvP setting the chosen rule set would allow like minded players to only be matched up  against each other. The meta players could challenge each others meta-of-the-month while the stock player would know that any Atlas D-DC they encounter is the exact same as the one they are using. A few options in between (consisting of no engine mods, limited weapon mods, etc) would allow Super Stock and Pro Mod to happily co-exist.

But wait, what do you mean by “limited changes”? Glad you asked.

Limits can be as restrictive as like-for-like, weight-for-weight, one-up/one-down, weight and/or space percentages, or something along the lines of Tech (maintainer) experience and Era levels. Here are a few;

  • Like-for-like; ex. Medium lasers can only replace medium lasers. This is much more  restrictive in a 3025 setting when we don’t have ER-PPCs to substitute for PPCs, ER Large Laser for a Large Laser, etc. Could apply if the Star League era weapons are discovered and found to be a bit more efficient in terms of heat, damage,  maintenance costs, etc.
  • Weight-for-Weight; Large Lasers are impossible to buy for love or money but you have two LRM-5s and a ton of LRM ammo sitting around? Let the Techs figure out how to make it all fit. They’re good at that sort of thing.
  • One-Up/One-Down; No replacement available for that shattered medium laser?  Swap it out for a  Small or Large Laser. Weight and space permitting the Mech Techs should be able to pull it off. This way the Catapult C4 doesn’t suddenly sprout dual PPCs when no one is expecting it.
  • Weight/Space percentages. Weight percentages could restrict engine swaps to only a few changes in KPH. This would not be a problem if HBS goes with a movement scheme that does away with the old 5/8, 6/9, 7/11, etc movement and opts for a more fluid one instead. Large weapons won’t fit in small weapon slots. Round pegs don’t go in square holes.
  • Tech and Era levels; Here we could bring into play the level of your ‘Mech Tech and their experience with it. Perhaps they do not have a lot of experience but in your campaign you’ve managed to discover the blueprints for a ‘Mech variant from the Star League era. Using the blueprint he is better able to understand the inner workings of the ‘Mech and can make changes easier as well as attempt more difficult changes to weapon load out, armor, engine size, etc.

And as a bonus the player could choose one or more of these options (those that do not conflict of course) and play a totally different rule set than many others would choose to.

In Summary

Options are great. The more that a studio can afford and implement the better the game can be. Game balance in a single player mode does not have to be as well tuned as in a multi-player mode. In PvP mode fewer options (but certainly not “no options”) can lead to a happier player base. All can choose what best suits their own play style without having to justify it to anyone but themselves as well as compete against only like minded players.

Other Units outside the scope of this game or not announced;

  • Jumpships; moves the Dropships around but most likely never owned by the player
  • LAMs (Land-Air ‘Mechs); official rules have swung widely, would be greatly surprised to see included
  • Naval Units (Surface, Subsurface, Hover, etc)
  • Quad ‘Mechs; PGI is not able to model four-legged ‘Mechs
  • Support Vehicles
  • Space combat
